Welcome to Cayuga County District

Named after the Cayuga Indian Tribe. A wandering nomadic tribe, having traveled around the northeast, never having a permanent settlement, the Cayuga Indians came to the area of New York in the 1500’s. They were known as fierce warriors, who forced the Huron and Algonquians, (the original tribes of New York), out of this territory. As the early colonists arrived in North America searching for a better way of life, the Indians and colonists shared ideas and knowledge.

Let’s Get Physical

If you have been reading your Scouting and or Boy’s Life magazine over the past several months, you will notice that there is a definite focus on becoming more physically fit.   Americans are becoming much more health conscious and taking steps to do a better job at sustaining longevity and taking care of our bodies. It is to that end that Cayuga and Interlakes Districts joined forces and developed the concept of a series of activities revolving around physical activity.

The 1st. activity was an introduction to backpacking and hiking trek. On October 15, approximately 160 Scouts and Scouters from Cayuga and Interlakes Districts backpacked and hiked the Erie Canal Towpath Trail to Veteran’s Memorial Park at Gillie Lake in Camillus, NY. Groups started either in Weedsport, NY or Jordan, NY.

2nd. Activity- May 18-20, 2012 weekend and involve a canoe trek and overnight beginning from Cayuga Lake thru the Erie Canal/Seneca Waterway to either Cross Lake or Baldwinsville Lion’s Park. Planning is currently underway for this part of the adventure so details will follow at a later time.

The 3rd. and final activity will take place in either September or October 2012 and involve a bicycle trek and possible overnight. The planning for this activity will begin after the canoe trek is completed.

Troop21small.gif

WAY TO GO SCOUTS!  DO A GOOD TURN DAILY! -Congrats to Pack 6 & Troop 21 Auburn, NY

The Cayuga County Chapter of the American Red Cross met with youth around Auburn in March
to accept checks on behalf of the Japan Disaster Relief.
During a recent Boy Scout Pinewood Derby, Boy Scout and Cub Scout members from Pack 6, Troop 21 led their own fundraiser of collecting money for the Japan Disaster Relief.  Scout leader John Cummings indicated that the young men thought of the idea and implemented it on their own and was pleased that the seeds of giving back to others had really taken hold with this group of youth.  Jarred Cummings, Jacob Cummings, Jimmy Dauenhauer, Kyle Wilmot, Shane McGregor and Owen Sparing led efforts to hand out flyers and speak to attendees at the Derby about their fundraiser.  The young men presented their check for $81 to the Cayuga County Chapter of the American Red Cross on behalf of the Cayuga County District Boy Scouts of America

A Third Generation Eagle Scout -Weedsport 59

Some say that carrying on traditions is a thing of the past. That today's fast paced lifestyle lends very little time to look back and take hold of something our parents enjoyed, or even rarer - something our grandparents felt passionate about. That is why when there is a chance to tell of a tradition being carried on, the story must be told.
Recently within our Council, a Scout earned his Eagle Badge. He was proud, not only for his accomplishment, but also for the fact that he was carrying on a family tradition. For not only was he a new Eagle Scout, he was the newest in a long list of Scouters within his family to do so.
