Boy Scout Geology Merit Weekend Scheduled for October

The Boy Scout Geology Merit Weekend is solely for Senior Level Boy Scouts who need their blue card signed in order receive their Geology Merit Badge.

 

GEOLOGY MERIT BADGE PROGRAM: The Herkimer Diamond Mines will be conducting a Boy Scout Jamboree Oct. 24-26. Cost is $23 per Boy Scout for program and mining fee. Adult and sibling cost is $7.50 per person for mining only fee. Reservations are required – reservation forms can be downloaded below or obtained by calling 315.717.0175.

OCTOBER 25 – SATURDAY PROGRAM
(tentative – schedule subject to change)
7:15 – 8 a.m. - Late Program Registration at the Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Campground Office
(Early Registration to be held Friday evening at the KOA office from 3:30 pm until 9:30 pm)
8 – 8:30 a.m. – Introduction and Welcome
8:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. – Scout Program
12:15 p.m. – 12:55 p.m. – Break for Lunch
1 – 4 p.m. – Scout Program
4 – 5 p.m. – Awards Ceremony

Curriculum Will Include The Following Modules (tentative – schedule subject to change)
Module #1 – Mining “Be a Rock Hound”                  Module #2 - Paleontology / Gemology
Module #3 – Energy Sources / Water Cycle    Module #4 - Earth Processes
Module #5 - Earth Materials                         Module #6 - Sustainability

Materials

  • All materials will be provided to Scouts during modules.
  • Scouts will have the opportunity to take home the following items: all diamonds found in the mines, all fossils found in the mines or in the sluice, all gemstones found in the sluice, and all jewelry and gift items made.
  • Prizes will be awarded at the Awards Ceremony.

 

Food Options (Reservations Required) — You are welcome to bring your own bag lunch and use our picnic areas.  If you would like us to provide meals, we can offer the following:
Saturday Lunch – Cost is $7 per lunch (lunch includes: choice of hamburger or hot dog, potato chips, applesauce, cookie, and a beverage) to be served at the Herkimer Diamond Cafe.
Sunday Breakfast – Cost is $6 per breakfast (breakfast includes: pancake / waffle, sausage, coffee / hot chocolate) to be served at the Herkimer Diamond KOA Pavilion.
Crystal Chandelier - Offering all program attendees 15 percent discount throughout the weekend

KOA ACCOMODATIONS:

OPTIONAL EVENTS FOR THOSE STAYING AT OUR KOA KAMPGROUND:
Movies will be playing in the Cinema both Friday and Saturday nights. On Friday there will be a flashlight candy hunt and on Saturday evening there will be a bonfire and sponsor a s’mores event at the fire pit.

Additional Information
CLOTHING: The Scouts will be outdoors for a majority of their time. Be prepared with the appropriate clothing. Sneakers or closed-toed shoes are required.
GOGGLES: If Scouts have their own goggles, bring them with you. If not, goggles can be purchased at the Herkimer Diamond Mine Store for $2.50 each.
HAMMERS: Will be provided for the mining modules. You are also welcome to bring your own if you choose.
PLASTIC BAGS: We will provide small Ziploc bags for your finds. Some prospectors will bring buckets to carry larger rocks.
