Merit Badge Counselor Policies
Policy concerning the number of merit badges any one merit badge counselor may teach.
Issued March 2012
At its December 2011 meeting, the Longhouse Council Board of Directors passed a resolution that limits to seven (7) the number of merit badges that any one Merit Badge Counselor may teach.
In making this determination, the Longhouse Council Board reviewed the 2011 Advancement Guide published by the National BSA. In that Guide, it was noted that merit badge counselors may be approved for as many badges as they are qualified, but that local Councils may impose limitations based on the needs of that Council and individual districts within that Council. The Advancement Guide also commented that “those units or individuals not encouraging scouts to expand their horizons by interacting with many different adults are not truly working in the spirit of the best interests of the youth.” Therefore, the Board concluded that it was in the best interests of the scouts to limit the number of merit badges any one Counselor may teach to seven (7).
